How I survive the swedish winter?

Posted by Asian living in Sweden On 10:40 AM

This was among the most common question my friends from Singapore asked. I understand why they are concern because to asian Swedish winter is extremely cold. For me, everything has it good and bad side. I have learned that it is important to have good thermal underwear,a warm jacket , glove and winter cap with good quality lining. The temp. during winter could range between minus 1 to 30 degree. To enjoy winter outdoor activities, it will be wise to invest in great quality outfits. I often swim at the indoor heated swimming pool to keep fit. I felt very uncomfortable being naked among strangers in the sauna from the begining, but it is getting better now. Last year new years eve, I have also tried bathing in a "badtunna" (a giant wooden jazcuzzi filled with warm water). These tub are often located outdoor so people have lovely views of the winter while bathing, this experience is quite exclusive. The swedish often like to drink beer and eat snack in the badtunna. Because the outdoor air is often very cold it is adviseable to put on a cap while in the tub. I know it look ridiculous, but thats the only way to keep our head from freezing. This is really nice and relaxing experience and I enjoy it very much. During grey period,I prefer to stay at home do spring cleaning, sewing or catch up on some reading or rest. The winter take up too much of my energy and I feel that I should rest as soon as I have the time. By doing that, I know I am not missing anything from outside. We got the most snow this winter so we have many fire place moments, its kind of cosy and romantic feeling & it help save electicity bill. I can understand why some swedish are longing for the snow so they could ride snow scooter, ski, ice fish and engage in other outdoor activities. I often dream about being able to ski on the mountain, I hope I can master this fun sport oneday. I know I can do it if only I am not afraid to fall, anything that make my feet slid, I am afraid! I really cannot afford to slip (Because of my back injury) and I do not want to wear that ridiculous helmet while skiing..not so cool!
